‘Commu’ is apublic modular seating unit able to make any shape, pattern or size withincorporated lighting, tables, shelter and various seating modules. From thecentral lighting unit each strand is for a specific generation with seatingmodules, materials and finishes addressing their needs and outlooks. Childrenhave brightly coloured interactive shapes allowing them to slide, climb and runover / under the modules, which are manufactured from 100% recycledpolyethylene containers.Older users have modules containing ergonomic seating with armrests, greeneryand things to look at (children playing). Iroko timber and mild steel with apolished finish has been used to create a high quality attractive area. Young people have modules with dramaticlevel changes allowing groups to gather on the seating, raised above otherusers ultimately creating their own space. Materials such as polished mildsteel and rubber coated seating modules are used for this generation. Provisionof shelter and good lighting ensures the facility can be used by allgenerations throughout the year, containing no hidden, dark or confined spaces.Each module and the central covering are coated with nanotechnology and photovoltaic coatingsto create power for the lighting modules. Titanium dioxide is coated on theflooring to absorb pollution and maintain smooth, grippy flooring surfaces forolder users. The designaddresses the research question as it allows observation of other generation’sbehaviours and attitudes, creating natural growth of community bonds, thebreakdown of preconceptions and eliminates, in future generations, parentalanxiety that currently exists. This natural growth increases generationalcontact, trust and the feeling of safety creating a strong, united,generationally diverse community.
